June ’23: Four R’s of Prayer – from the Spring Day of Prayer
By Danita, in collaboration with Pastor Ray

On an unseasonably hot Saturday in May, a group of us gathered to spend time interacting with God in prayer individually and as a group. Pastor Ray used the Lord’s Prayer to guide us through reverence, response, requests, and readiness as we spent time with our Heavenly Father. In fact, he encourages all of us to incorporate these elements into our everyday prayers.

Reverence

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,”
(Matt. 6:9b, NIV)

As we come before God, start from a posture of reverence as we recognize His holiness and “otherness”. Who is God? What is His character like?

Here are a few worship songs for further reflection:

Response

“your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.”
(Matt. 6:10, NIV)

What is our response to who God is? What do we need to change? What do we need to surrender or yield? What do we need to pick up? What do we need to do or be?

Here are a few worship songs for further reflection:

Requests

“Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.”
(Matt. 6:11-12, NIV)

What are some situations and relationships we need to pray over? Which specific people does God want us to forgive? Who is God calling us to pray for? Are there resources which may be needed to accomplish the work to which God has called us?

Here are a few worship songs for further reflection:

Readiness

“And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.”
(Matt. 6:13, NIV)

What do we need from God to help me face the temptations, distractions, and burdens as we leave this time of prayer and continue on with the rest of our day or week?
